Why Venting is So Important

A high-performance roof takes more than just shingles. The performance of any roof depends on an entire system of Roofing Essentials™ accessory products working and performing together, including ventilation, hip and ridge shingles, underlayment, and attic insulation. The Owens Corning Roofing System is a lineup of essential products that can help provide maximum durability for your roof, and the most protection for your home.

Step 1: Ventilation

HOW IMPORTANT IS VENTING?

The most important issue regarding proper venting is the fact that all composition manufactures require it or your warranty is void.

Have any other roofers told you that you have no manufacturers warranty if you don’t vent your attic properly? Nine out of ten times the answer is no.

Some roofers offer proper venting as an option. Proper venting is not an option.

Extreme heat in the attic can prematurely deteriorate your roofing material. Also proper venting helps protect your attic against wood rot and mildew.

Efficient attic ventilation can reduce heating and cooling costs up to 30%.

One of the most efficient and cheapest ways to properly vent your attic is by installing ridge vent. A continues vent along the ridge of your house, which is covered by the ridge units. Unlike fans or turbines, ridge vent doesn’t clutter your roof.

Vents along your eaves are absolutely useless as a venting system without an exhaust. All venting systems require an intake and an exhaust. The eave vents act as an intake and the ridge vent acts as the exhaust. This system is called a balanced venting system.

As your Select Shingle Roofer it is my responsibility to apply the Certainteed shingles as if they were going on my own house. I wouldn’t apply any composition shingle on my house without the proper venting and I won’t on your house.

Your best choice in ridge vents is "Shinglevent II" ridge vent by Shinglevent.

PROPER VENTING IS NOT AN OPTION

Step 2: Ceiling Insulation

Adding insulation to your attic is a blast with the AttiCat® Insulation Blowing Machine! It conditions the AttiCat® Expanding Blown-In PINK Fiberglas™ Insulation by breaking it up and fluffing it, adding millions of the tiny air pockets that give the material its insulating power. The insulation is conditioned further throughout the length of the hose, and as it bounces its way up to your attic, more and more air pockets are added, increasing its insulating power even more. And since Fiberglas™ insulation will not settle, it will keep its energy-saving R-value over time
